Amodu Shaibu's Demise - Another shock to Nigeria

Just three days after Nigeria mourned the passing away of coach Stephen Keshi, another tragedy strikes in same Benin City. This time around it is ex-Super Eagles coach Amodu Shaibu. Nigerians woke up on Saturday to hear that another big player in Nigerian football has passed on.

It was gathered that on Friday, during a discussion with his cousin Mr Afegbua, the deceased had told him that he will be travelling to his hometown, Okpella in Edo State, the very next day being Saturday; a journey he never lived to undertake. That same Friday night he complained of chest pain. A doctor was called and medications given to him. He was advised to stop the Ramadan fast due to his condition. Unfortunately, he was discovered dead on Saturday by 4am when they went to wake him up for morning prayer.

Brief Career History
- Late Amodu was born in Benin City in April 1958.
- During his playing days he played for Dumez and Niger Tornadoes as a striker. Sadly, his career came to a halt after he broke his leg.
- He moved to coaching; handling quite a number of teams like BBC Lions, El-Kanemi Warriors, Shooting Stars and Orlando Pirates (South Africa).
- He took up the job of coaching the Nigeria national team in 2001 which lasted 10 months before he was unfairly dismissed.
- He took over as manager again in 2008 but was sacked two years after.
- He was appointed technical director of the national team in May 2013 and re-appointed manager in 2014 replacing the now late Stephen Keshi. Keshi returned to the role two weeks after but was fired in 2015 and Amodu was called to take over temporarily.
- Amodu was replaced by Sunday Oliseh in July 2015.
- He died on 10 June in Benin City and has already been buried according to Muslim rites.

He will be greatly missed.
